With the increasing use of technology by large and small public and private sector organizations, by governments and by law enforcement agencies, a great deal of data is being collected by all and sundry. Citizens are not aware of who has access to the data, how long it is being retained for and what it is being used for. The privacy of an individual and his/her information seems not to be on the agenda at all.

It is important therefore that we as advocates speak up about the need for legislation that protects the rights of individuals. It is also important for us to ensure that awareness is created so that people speak up for themselves and insist on safeguards being put in place so that misuse of data does not occur.

Bolo Bhi has already started to campaign against invasion of privacy and is and found advocates among university students, the business community, civil society and even within the government.
