Episode 17: Disinformation – A Perspective from Brazil

Participant:

Heloisa Massaro – head of research on Information and Politics at InternetLab. She is a Master of Laws student in Jurisprudence and Philosophy of Law at the University of São Paulo, where she also earned her Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B., 2018). Between 2016 and 2017, she was an exchange student at Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) of the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po – Paris). She was part of the Human Rights Law Clinic at FDUSP (2014-2015), and also of the Nucleus of Law Anthropology at FFLCH-USP (2015-2016). Her researches focuses on the intersection of law and technology and encompasses thematic areas such as online political communication and political propaganda, and content moderation and regulation of online speech.

Summary:

We discussed disinformation in relation to elections and political campaigns. Parallels between Brazil and Pakistan in terms of the political discourse and weaponisation of “fake news.” Regulatory, policy, and legislative approaches to content regulation and data protection.
